In a club statement City said: “Ilkay is now observing a 10-day period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK government protocol on quarantine. Everyone at the club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery.”
Gündogan is also ruled out of City’s matches against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Thursday and Leicester on Sunday. It is understood his positive test does not have any implications for the rest of the City squad.
Gundogan’s teammates Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez tested positive for coronavirus this month but have returned to training.
Manchester City are without a number of key players when they begin their Premier League campaign at Wolves tonight.
Striker Sergio Aguero is definitely out as he continues to recover from knee surgery, while City confirmed that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is in self-isolation after testing positive for Covid-19. Aymeric Laporte, who has also been isolating in the last fortnight, misses out too.
Those absentees pave the way for new signings Nathan Ake to make his debuts for City tonight, against a Wolves side who did the double over the Blues last season, as well as taking a point from Pep Guardiola’s men at Molineux the year before. John Stones is recalled to p[artner the new boy in central defence.
Ferran Torres is among the substitutes, as are youngsters Liam Delap, Tommy Doyle and Adrian Bernabe.
Wolves won their opening match of the season last weekend, but lost in the Carabao Cup to Championship side Stoke, and have lost key man Diogo Jota to Liverpool this week.
The Premier League returns to Molineux this evening as Wolverhampton Wanderers play hosts to Manchester City.
Nuno Espirito Santo has recalled Rui Patricio, Marcal, Joao Moutinho, Daniel Podence, Pedro Neto and Raul Jimenez after leaving them on the bench for Thursday’s Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City.
Moutinho replaces Leander Dendoncker to slot in alongside compatriot Ruben Neves in midfield, with Podence, Neto and Jimenez forming the three-man attack.
New signing Ki-Jana Hoever, who joined from Liverpool over the weekend, is ineligible so Adama Traore continues at wing-back for the second successive Premier League game.
